Senior Backend Software Engineer

Overview:

Owl Practice is the US and Canada’s leading practice management solution for psychologists, social workers and therapists. We’re a fast-growing SaaS start-up and we are looking for a senior backend software engineer to support our growth.

The person in this role will have hands-on experience building a system from the ground up and be able to lead and contribute to software development, database administration, AWS cloud infrastructure, and software architecture.

Responsibilities and Duties

This role will be involved in:

• Developing and launching new features with an emphasis on backend scalability and efficiency
• Enhancing existing functionality and optimizing the platform
• Building out and maintaining our backend systems (AWS)
• Working with our RESTful API (Python Tornado Framework)
• Maintaining and building out our relational SQL schema (MySQL) with AWS Aurora RDS
• Aiding our support team with client-requests through various logs
• Working closely with our engineering and product teams
• Testing and bug fixing
• Anything else it takes to make Owl great!

Qualifications and Skills

You have experience with:

• Database management, with a strong emphasis on MySQL and AWS Aurora RDS.
• Software architecture principles and best practices for scalable and efficient backend systems.
• Design, implementation and consumption of RESTful APIs
• GitHub and version control best practices
• Python (3.x)
• Previous experience with large-scale web applications (bonus points for healthcare experience)
• DevOps practices, especially in the context of AWS services.
• Linux Ubuntu (or other flavours of Linux)
• Network security (SQL injections, and more…)

You are / have:

• A university undergraduate degree (math, comp sci/engineering)
• Driven, hard-working, and a great problem solver
• Obsessed with quality and detail oriented
• Knowledge implementing industry-standard best practices
• A proven track record of successful project delivery
• Curious about how startups work and always keen to learn more

Owl does not have an office at present. As a result, this role will involve telecommuting (i.e. working from home). Potential candidates will need to be able to work remotely with in-person meetings in Toronto happening as needed. Slack interactions will happen on a daily basis.
